O filme conta a história de um cangaceiro romantico chamado Jesuíno Alves Calado (Jesuíno Brilhante), nome que herdara de seu tio, também cangaceiro. Jesuino nasceu no sítio "Tuiuú", distante sete quilometros da cidade de Patu, regiao oeste do Rio Grande do Norte.
